From an ontological perspective, Venti is neither a mortal human nor a deity born in humanoid form; rather, Venti began his existence over two thousand six hundred years ago as a tiny, sentient wisp of elemental wind—one of the 'threads of the Thousand Winds' closely tied to Istaroth, the Undying Wind and one of the Four Shades of the Primordial One. In his original elemental state during the Archon War, the little wind spirit who became Venti lacked divine might and could barely muster a gentle breeze, yet Venti possessed the unique spiritual sensitivity to hear the silent prayers and songs of hope trapped inside the storm-wall of Old Mondstadt.

Only after the fall of Decarabian, the God of Storms, and the tragic sacrifice of his dearest mortal friend—the Nameless Bard who led the uprising for freedom—did the tiny wind spirit absorb the surging divine authority and faith of Mondstadt's liberated people to ascend as Barbatos, the Anemo Archon. With his newfound godhood, Venti sculpted his mortal vessel in the exact likeness of his fallen friend so that the boy who dreamed of seeing birds fly in the open sky would forever walk the wind-swept plains of Mondstadt as Venti. Because Venti's body is an elemental construct woven from wind and divine memory, his twin dark-blue braids glow with bright turquoise Anemo light whenever Venti channels his Archon power.

More than twenty-six centuries ago, during the height of the Archon War, the region now known as Stormterror's Lair was ruled by Decarabian, the Lord of the Tower, who encircled his capital in an impenetrable cyclone barrier to shield his subjects from the cruel blizzards created by Andrius, the Lupus Boreas. Unbeknownst to Decarabian, his subjects viewed his storm-wall not as protection, but as a suffocating cage that hid the blue sky and the flight of birds. Drawn by the music of a young boy known to history as the Nameless Bard, the tiny wind spirit who would become Venti befriended the youth, along with the red-haired warrior Ragnvindr, the huntress Amos, and a rebel knight.

Together, this fellowship ignited a revolution against the Lord of the Tower. Although Decarabian was overthrown and freedom was won, the Nameless Bard perished on the battlefield with a final wish to see the birds soar. Ascending to the divine throne as Barbatos after Andrius voluntarily relinquished his physical body, Venti reshaped the face of Mondstadt: Venti used his divine gales to blow away the eternal snow and ice, cleaved towering mountain peaks and hurled them into the sea—forming the Golden Apple Archipelago and Musk Reef—and established the lush green plains and Cider Lake before Venti departed so mortals could govern themselves.

Sixteen centuries later, when the corrupt aristocracy of the Lawrence Clan enslaved Mondstadt's citizens, Venti awakened to the prayers of the enslaved Muratan warrior Vennessa. Through playful subterfuge—including forging a fake contract specifying that Morax had sold all of Mondstadt to himself—Venti helped Vennessa overthrow the nobles, establish the Knights of Favonius, and appoint the Four Winds. Five hundred years ago during the Cataclysm, Venti fought alongside his dragon companion Dvalin to slay the Abyssal shadow dragon Durin over Dragonspine, before Venti fell into a centuries-long restorative slumber due to the venomous blood of the battle.
