To understand the ontological classification of La Signora, one must trace her transformation from an ordinary mortal woman of Mondstadt into an elemental entity composed entirely of liquid flame. Five centuries ago, Rosalyne-Kruzchka Lohefalter was born human and studied pyro-elemental arts at the Sumeru Akademiya. When she returned to Mondstadt during the Cataclysm only to discover that her lover Rostam had perished fighting Abyssal monsters, her grief and fury transcended mortal limits. Without needing a Pyro Vision, she practiced a forbidden art that replaced her blood and flesh with 'liquid fire,' becoming the Crimson Witch of Embers.

Although her transformation granted her devastating power to incinerate the monsters plaguing Teyvat, the undying flames continuously devoured her own life force and scarred her face. When the First Fatui Harbinger, Pierro ('The Jester'), found her on the brink of self-immolation, he bestowed upon her a Cryo Delusion engineered by the Tsaritsa to encase her burning heart in eternal frost. Thus, the woman known to the modern world as La Signora existed in a precarious equilibrium of ice and hellfire—her pale skin, black half-mask, and regal poise sustained only by the freezing seal of her Delusion.

Five hundred years before the Traveler's arrival, a young maiden of Mondstadt named Rosalyne-Kruzchka Lohefalter enchanted the streets of the City of Freedom with her clear soprano voice. She fell deeply in love with Rostam, the 'Wolf Pup' and right-hand knight of Grand Master Arundolyn, who gifted her a special hydro-glass timepiece to count the days until she graduated from her studies at the Sumeru Akademiya.

Before Rosalyne could complete her scholarship in Sumeru, the Cataclysm erupted across Teyvat. While Barbatos and Dvalin battled the shadow dragon Durin in the skies above Mondstadt, Rostam led the Knights of Favonius on the ground and was fatally struck down. Returning home just as the timepiece completed its cycle, the woman who would become La Signora found her world reduced to ashes. Blaming the absentee Anemo Archon and the monsters of the Abyss for taking everything she loved, La Signora abandoned her mortal body to become the Crimson Witch of Embers, swearing to burn away all crookedness and pain in the world—while carefully ensuring she never harmed a single innocent human.

After centuries of burning slowly to death, Rosalyne was recruited by Pierro into the Fatui as the Eighth Harbinger, La Signora. With her memories of Rostam buried beneath layers of frost and diplomatic cruelty, La Signora became the Tsaritsa's foremost emissary—personally ripping the Anemo Gnosis from Venti's chest in Mondstadt, finalizing the Geo Gnosis contract in Liyue's Northland Bank, and establishing the Delusion Factory in Inazuma before the fatal confrontation that claimed La Signora.
