In the genealogical history of Mondstadt, Barbara is a mortal human born to two of the city's most prestigious lineages: her mother Frederica hails from the ancient aristocratic Gunnhildr Clan—which has defended Mondstadt since the overthrow of Decarabian—while her father, Seamus Pegg, is a renowned adventurer who became the Cardinal of Daybreak at the Church of Favonius. Consequently, although she goes by the surname Pegg in her church duties, Barbara carries the same noble Gunnhildr bloodline as her older sister Jean.

Her constellation, Crater (meaning 'The Chalice' or 'The Cup'), represents a sacred vessel overflowing with pure, restorative water—a fitting emblem for a Deaconess whose Hydro magic washes away physical pain and emotional despair. Unlike warriors who wield elemental power for conquest, Barbara manifests her Hydro Vision as musical staffs, sparkling water droplets, and rainbow halos, turning the battlefield into a sanctuary of rejuvenation.

The early childhood of Barbara was marked by the painful divorce of her parents, Frederica Gunnhildr and Seamus Pegg. While her older sister Jean remained with their mother to undergo rigorous martial training as the heir to the Gunnhildr Clan, young Barbara stayed in the care of her father Seamus, following him into the clergy of the Church of Favonius. Growing up in the shadow of her sister's extraordinary swordsmanship and rapid rise through the Knights of Favonius, Barbara initially tried to learn the blade as well, only to realize that she lacked Jean's natural talent for combat.

Determined not to be a burden and eager to surpass her sister in at least one meaningful way, Barbara turned toward healing and caregiving within the Cathedral. One fateful night, she stayed beside a young child suffering from a stubborn, burning fever that refused to break despite conventional remedies. Remembering an old folk tale that the gentle singing of a pure heart could soothe illness, Barbara sang softly at the child's bedside until her voice grew hoarse and she collapsed into sleep from exhaustion. When she awoke the next morning, the child's fever had vanished completely—and a radiant Hydro Vision rested in Barbara's hand.

Later, the eccentric adventurer Alice gifted Barbara a magazine from another world about 'idols'—performers who inspire and unite people through song and dance. Captivated by the idea that music could heal hearts before they ever broke, Barbara embraced the mantle of Mondstadt's Shining Idol while continuing her daily service as Deaconess.
