To understand Arataki Itto within the mythological hierarchy of Genshin Impact, one must examine the history of the Oni race in Inazuma. Unlike ordinary mortals, Arataki Itto is a descendant of the Crimson Oni—one of the two dominant ancestral branches of the yokai Oni tribe, alongside the Blue Oni. Centuries after the renowned Oni warrior Mikoshi Chiyo was corrupted during the Cataclysm and her sons Mikoshi Nagamasa and Takamine diverged in their paths, the Oni population gradually intermarried with humans, causing their supernatural bloodline to thin while retaining distinctive anatomical traits.

The most prominent physical markers of Arataki Itto are the two sweeping crimson horns sprouting from his forehead, sharp scarlet body markings across his torso and shoulders, and pointed canine teeth. Alongside his immense physical strength, his Oni physiology carries a canonical biological vulnerability common to all Oni in Inazuman folklore: a severe allergic reaction to soybeans and fried tofu (aburaage). Even a single thrown bean triggers intense sneezing, weakness, and hives—a weakness he stubbornly refuses to let diminish his pride when upholding the traditional Inazuman practice of mame-maki.

The early childhood of Arataki Itto was marked by tragedy and social ostracism. Born into a rural village outside Inazuma City, the young Crimson Oni was feared by superstitious villagers because of his horns and hot-blooded temperament. When a string of illnesses and misfortunes struck the settlement, the terrified townsfolk blamed the Oni family and drove them out into the wilderness. Shortly after their exile, both of his parents succumbed to illness and exhaustion, leaving the young boy orphaned and wandering the streets alone.

On the brink of starvation, Arataki Itto was discovered and adopted by a compassionate elderly human woman affectionately known as Granny Oni. Despite living in modest circumstances in Hanamizaka, Granny Oni raised him with unconditional warmth, teaching him that true strength is measured by kindness, honesty, and standing up for the weak regardless of how the world judges one's horns. Inspired by her love, the boy grew into a boisterous protector who gathered fellow misfits—Akira, Genta, Mamoru, and later the brilliant deputy Kuki Shinobu—to found the Arataki Gang.

As a young adult, Arataki Itto woke up one morning to find a gleaming Geo Vision resting at his waist. Proud of the divine acknowledgment, he wore it openly until Kujou Sara defeated him in an honorable street duel during the Vision Hunt Decree. Even stripped of his Vision, his fiery spirit never dimmed; he continued flooding the city bulletin boards with rematches against Kujou Sara until the Decree was abolished and his Geo Vision was rightfully returned.
