Ontologically, Durin occupies a unique category among all playable beings in Teyvat: he is a synthetic Khemia dragon-human incarnation formed from the alchemical harmonization of two distinct vessels. His primordial body was forged by Rhinedottir using Abyssal bio-alchemy, producing a horned black-and-crimson dragon whose toxic blood corroded Dvalin's spirit and turned Skyfrost Nail's shattered ley lines into Crimson Agate. Yet unlike true Vishaps evolved from the Light Realm, the original Dragonspine leviathan possessed a childlike consciousness trapped inside an apocalyptic frame that unknowingly poisoned everything it touched.

The second half of his identity stems from Mini-Durin, the clockwork-and-origami fairy-tale dragon written into the world of Simulanka by the Hexenzirkel witch Andersdotter ('M') to give the tragic beast a second chance at friendship alongside the Wanderer and Albedo. When the vitality surging within Dragonspine's core threatened to birth a mindless Abyssal catastrophe, Albedo conducted a supreme Rubedo-stage Khemia ritual—synthesizing purified Crimson Agate essence, embryonic homunculus chalk, and Mini-Durin's redeemed soul into a youthful human-dragon form. Consequently, Durin possesses curved draconic horns, slit-pupiled ruby eyes, a scaled tail, and retractable crimson-membrane wings (`Durin_wings.pmx`) while breathing warm, purified Pyro flames devoid of Abyssal corruption.

The ancient history of Durin began five centuries ago in the sunless laboratories of Khaenri'ah, where Rhinedottir sang lullabies to her embryonic draconic creation before sending him out into the surface world of Teyvat. As recorded in the lore of Festering Desire and the Dragonspine Spear, Durin perceived his horrific rampage across Mondstadt as a joyous dream in which he danced amidst blooming flowers alongside the Windborne Bard and the glamorous azure dragon Dvalin, never realizing until his dying breath on the freezing mountain peak that his claws had torn the sky apart.

Centuries later, while his physical heart continued to pulse beneath Entombed City, Rhinedottir's close friend Andersdotter wove the tale of Simulanka so that a gentler reflection of the dragon could experience redemption rather than terror. During the Summertide Scales and Tales chronicle, the Wanderer—who recognized his own history of abandonment and perilous power in the lonely beast—helped break the curse of perception afflicting Simulanka's dragon, shrinking him into the cheerful companion Mini-Durin and prophesying alongside Albedo that when the heart on Dragonspine stirred again, both incarnations would meet.

That prophecy came to pass during the Paralogism crisis in Mondstadt. As the resurrected pulse of Wyrmrest Valley began destabilizing Mondstadt's elemental arteries and spawning synthetic mimics, Albedo orchestrated a daring alchemical operation inside Dragonspine's subterranean crucible. By channeling the destructive resurgence of the ancient dragon carcass through a purified Khemia matrix anchored by Mini-Durin's core, Albedo gave his older brother a mortal-sized humanoid body—allowing Durin to finally walk the cobblestone streets of Mondstadt in peace.
