1. Executive Overview — Who is Chongyun in Genshin Impact?

Chongyun, known throughout Liyue as a diligent young heir to an ancient clan of Tianheng Thaumaturges, is a wandering exorcist who wields a heavy claymore and a Cryo Vision in pursuit of evil spirits. Ironically, despite having banished thousands of demons across Liyue's mountains and marshes, Chongyun has never once laid eyes on a ghost or spoken a single incantation in battle: his congenital 'pure Yang' constitution is so overwhelmingly potent that every phantom within miles flees in terror the moment he approaches.

Viewing this effortless passive exorcism as an unprofessional shortcut, the earnest young thaumaturge trains relentlessly in snowy peaks and munches on freezing popsicles to suppress his fiery internal energy. On this dedicated page, cosplayers, 3D character artists, and Genshin Impact lore researchers can inspect the official Chongyun 3D model in real time while reading a complete dossier on his Congenital Positivity, his blood relationship to his aunt Shenhe, his Layered Frost Cryo combat mechanics, and his misadventures with his best friend Xingqiu.

02 · SPECIES, LINEAGE & ONTOLOGY · 种族与血脉考据

Chongyun’s Species, Heritage & Biological Nature

In the physiological and spiritual lore of Genshin Impact, Chongyun is a mortal human born into Liyue's prestigious clan of exorcists, yet he possesses a rare congenital anomaly known as 'Congenital Positivity' or an abundance of pure Yang energy (純陽之體). In traditional Liyue thaumaturgy, ghosts and lingering miasma are composed of cold Yin energy; because Chongyun's body radiates scorching Yang vitality like a miniature sun, spectral entities evaporate or flee before he can even draw a paper talisman.

However, this pure Yang constitution carries a severe behavioral side effect: any exposure to heat, spicy food, hot springs, or intense emotional excitement causes his internal Yang energy to boil over, sending Chongyun into a state of uninhibited, hot-blooded mania that he cannot remember once he cools down. To keep his pulse tranquil and his Yang qi suppressed, he relies on his Cryo Vision, ice-cold baths on Dragonspine, and a steady supply of Qingxin-flavored popsicles.

03 · HISTORICAL BACKGROUND & ORIGINS · 身世背景与过往历史

The Origins and Historical Journey of Chongyun

Born into a legendary Liyue family of exorcists whose ancestry connects directly to Shenhe—rendering the adepti-trained Shenhe his maternal aunt—Chongyun was raised from infancy on tales of heroic thaumaturges who battled vengeful spirits with sword arrays and talismans. Eager to uphold his family's honor, the boy memorized every volume of exorcism scripture and practiced martial forms from dawn until dusk.

Yet the very first time young Chongyun entered a notoriously haunted manor to perform a rite, the resident poltergeists vanished the instant he stepped across the threshold. Initially thrilled by his success, he soon realized the frustrating truth: it was not his hard-earned martial skill or talisman mastery that drove the spirits away, but the passive Yang aura of his birth constitution. Feeling that relying on a congenital trait was unworthy of a true exorcist, he vowed to suppress his Congenital Positivity and banish an evil spirit through orthodox martial arts alone.

While Paradoxically wishing for coldness and tranquility in a body overflowing with fiery Yang energy, Chongyun received a Cryo Vision rather than the Pyro Vision everyone expected—a divine gift that aids him in chilling his meridians as he continues his quest.

04 · PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILE & BONDS · 性格特征、行事准则与人际关系

Chongyun’s Personality, Ideals, and Relationships in Teyvat

Under normal circumstances, Chongyun is solemn, disciplined, polite, and endearingly gullible. Because he intentionally suppresses his emotions to prevent a Yang flare-up, he speaks in a calm, measured cadence and takes everything people tell him at face value. When he accidentally consumes even a single bite of Jueyun Chili—such as during one infamous dinner at Wanmin Restaurant—his personality flips completely: he jumps onto tables, challenges every diner in sight, sings at the top of his lungs, and pays for everyone's meals.

His closest friend and constant source of trouble is Xingqiu, the second son of the Feiyun Commerce Guild. Xingqiu delights in fabricating elaborate rumors of 'rare, Yang-resistant ghosts' to send Chongyun on wild goose chases across Liyue, yet Xingqiu also genuinely looks out for him and helps clear his name whenever scams target the trusting exorcist. After encountering his long-lost aunt Shenhe during the rebuilding of the Jade Chamber, Chongyun began training alongside her in the mountains, marveling at her transcendent mastery of thaumaturgy.

On the other hand, Chongyun harbors a complicated tension toward Wangsheng Funeral Parlor Director Hu Tao, whose cheerful, irreverent attitude toward spirits clashes with his strict exorcist training—and whose mischievous smile immediately makes his Yang energy spike.

05 · COMBAT ABILITIES & ELEMENTAL MASTERY · 战斗能力、技能机制与神之眼权能

Chongyun’s Combat Capabilities, Elemental Authority & Kit Breakdown

In both canon lore and gameplay mechanics, Chongyun blends heavy claymore swordsmanship with flying spirit-blade formations and Cryo field infusions. By anchoring a Layered Frost circle on the ground, Chongyun empowers melee teammates with continuous Cryo application while raining down giant ethereal ice greatswords.

Normal & Charged Attack Choreography

Through Demonbane, the young exorcist performs up to four sweeping claymore strikes, culminating in a downward vertical cleave that projects a shockwave of frost forward along the ground.

Elemental Skill & Tactical Deployment

His signature Elemental Skill, Spirit Blade: Chonghua's Layered Frost, slams his greatsword into the earth to trigger an upfront Cryo explosion and establish a circular Chonghua Frost Field. Within this field, all Sword, Claymore, and Polearm characters have their weapons infused with Cryo energy, converting their Normal, Charged, and Plunging Attacks into Cryo damage.

Elemental Burst & Supreme Manifestation

When unleashing his Elemental Burst, Spirit Blade: Cloud-Parting Star, Chongyun weaves rapid hand seals to summon three gigantic ethereal Spirit Blades in mid-air (increased to four blades at Constellation 6) that crash down sequentially onto the earth, dealing high AoE Cryo damage and launching enemies skyward.

Lore Strength, Passives & Signature Synergy

Through his passive talents Steady Breathing and Rimechaser Blade, all melee characters standing inside Chonghua's Layered Frost gain +8% Normal Attack SPD, and when the Frost Field expires, an additional Spirit Blade automatically drops onto a nearby enemy to deal 100% of the skill's AoE Cryo DMG and reduce the struck enemy's Cryo RES by 10% for 8 seconds. His utility passive Gallant Journey reduces Liyue expedition time by 25%.

Accompanying the Traveler to investigate ghostly sightings around Liyue Harbor and Wuwang Hill, Chongyun tested his deductive reasoning through a 'Test of Courage,' cared for frightened children while Giving away his precious popsicles to keep from overheating, and realized that protecting living people is just as vital to an exorcist's calling as banishing phantoms.

Event #2: The Crane Returns on the Wind (Meeting Aunt Shenhe)

Archon Quest Interlude Chapter: Act I

During the defense of Liyue against Beisht and the subsequent investigation into Shenhe's mortal origins, ancestral clan records revealed that Shenhe comes from a branch family of Chongyun's exorcist lineage, making her Chongyun's aunt despite her youthful appearance.
